Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) use standard observation codes to show the severity and urgency of any issues found during inspection and testing.

The most common codes are:

C1 – Danger present

This indicates an immediate risk to safety. There is a real danger of electric shock or fire.

Action is required immediately

The installation (or part of it) may be made safe at the time of inspection

A C1 will result in an unsatisfactory EICR

C2 – Potentially dangerous

This indicates a condition that could become dangerous if not addressed.

Remedial work is required as soon as possible

The installation is considered unsafe until remedial works are completed

A C2 will result in an unsatisfactory EICR

C3 – Improvement recommended

This indicates that the installation is not unsafe but does not fully meet current standards.

Remedial work is recommended but not legally required

The installation can continue to be used safely

A C3 does not make the report unsatisfactory

FI – Further investigation required

This means that an issue could not be fully assessed during the inspection.

Further investigation is required to determine safety

This may be due to access limitations or system complexity

An FI may result in an unsatisfactory EICR until resolved
